MAP discussion session: second- and third-year undergraduate students, KCL
Thursday 6th November 2014, 6-7pm, Philosophy Bar
On Thursday 6th November, 6-7pm we invite all second- and third-year undergraduates to join us in the Philosophy Bar for an informal discussion to share your experience of studying philosophy in higher education. We will also be looking to you for advice on how we can best make this MAP chapter work for our department. As students who have been in undergraduate studies for at least a year at university, your perspectives on the experience are invaluable to us in thinking about how to organise the KCL chapter. For more information about the MAP initiative, click here.
Nibbles and a glass of wine or a soft drink will be available for all participants, thanks to support from the Philosophy Department.
Please RSVP to [email protected] to give us an idea of numbers.

MAP welcome event: first-year undergraduate students
Friday 26th September 2014, 5:30-6:30pm, Philosophy Bar, KCL
To all incoming first-year undergraduates: on Friday 26th September, 5:30pm-6:30pm, the KCL MAP chapter invites you to join us in the Philosophy Bar for an informal chat to share your experience of applying to study philosophy at university. Here's what the event's about:
Many groups are widely underrepresented in higher education and, amongst the humanities, this is particularly striking in philosophy departments. The barriers that face members of these groups at the various levels of higher education are likely to be different in significant ways. An important step in redressing these imbalances is to identify their causes.
During this event, we’re interested in finding out more about and discussing the experiences of students at the earliest of these levels: applying to university for the first time, through UCAS. We would like to invite first year undergraduate students to come along to the department bar and discuss their experience of applying to King’s, and to the Philosophy department.
We’re particularly interested in discussing aspects of this experience that pertain to the accessing of higher education by underrepresented groups and the barriers or difficulties faced in going through the application process. The hope is that by learning about these experiences, and working with schools, colleges and our university, we can go a little way in making higher education, and philosophy, a more inclusive environment.
Clare and Sarah will be at the undergraduate common room at 5:25pm to show you the way to the bar. The bar is also sign-posted from the undergraduate common room. If you have a timetable clash then don’t miss your seminar, but do feel free to come along as soon as you can make it. Free drinks (glass of wine or soft drink) and nibbles are available to all. Many thanks to the Department of Philosophy for supporting this event.
